This section gives the main Katha Chopai (verse from the Tulsidas Ramayana) for many of the Ram Kathas. We will be adding to this section.

सुनु सुरेस रघुनाथ सुभाऊ । निज अपराध रिसाहिं न काऊ ॥
जो अपराधु भगत कर करई । राम रोष पावक सो जरई ॥

Listen, O lord of gods; It is Sri Rama's nature not to be angry at any offence against himself. But he who sins against his devotees is surely consumed in the fire of his wrath.

Bal Kaand – Doha 50
Bishnu jo sura hita nartanu dhāri | Sou sarbagya jathā tripurāri ||
बिष्नु जो सुर हित नरतनु धारी । सोउ सर्बग्य जथा त्रिपुरारी ॥
Even Vishnu who takes a human form for the sake of Gods, is omniscient like the Slayer of Tripura, Shiva.

Bal Kand – Doha 138
Bhujabal bisva jitaba tumha jahiā | dharihahi bishnu manuja tanu tahiā ||
भुजबल बिस्व जितब तुम्ह जहिआ । धरिहहिं बिष्नु मनुज तनु तहिआ ॥
When you have subdued the universe by the might of your arm, God Vishnu shall take a human form.

Then Brahma admonished Earth, who was rid of all fear and felt reassured in her heart.

Bal Kand – Doha 187
Jo kachu āyasu brahmā dinhā | harashe dev bilamb na kinhā ||
जो कछु आयसु ब्रह्माँ दीन्हा । हरषे देव बिलंब न कीन्हा ॥
And the Gods were delighted to receive the orders that Brahma gave, and lost no time in carrying them out.

Having conceived it, the great Lord Siva treasured it in His mind till. when a favourable opportunity presented itself, he communicated it to his consort, Siva (Parvati).

Bal Kand – Doha 40
Rāmkathā munibarj bakhāni | suni mahes param sukhu māni ||
रामकथा मुनिबर्ज बखानि । सुनी महेस परम सुखु मानी ॥
The great sage narrated at length the story of Rama and Lord Mahesa listened to it with extreme delight.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 84

Lord Sri Rama, who is all compassion, is readily touched by others, pain.

Uttar Kand – Doha 40
Nar sarir dhari je par pirā | karahin te sahahin mahā bhava bhirā ||
नर सरीर धरि जे पर पीरा । करहिं ते सहहिं महा भव भीरा ॥
They who inflict pain on others even after attaining the human body have to suffer the terrible pangs of birth and death.

Adorned with all good traits, the girl shall win the unfailing love of her husband.

Bal Kand – Doha 69
Jau tapu karai kumāri tumhāri | Bhāviu meti sakahi tripurāri ||
जौं तपु करै कुमारि तुम्हारी । भाविउ मेटि सकहिं त्रिपुरारी ॥
If your daughter practises austerity, the slayer of the demon Tripura, Shiva, can even erase the lines of Fate.

Troops of Gods and demons, Kinnaras(demigods) and men, all devoutly bathe in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati.

Sur kinnar nara nāg munisā | jay jay jay kahi dehim asisā ||
सुर किंनर नर नाग मुनिसा । जय जय जय कहि देहिं असीसा ॥
Gods, Kinnars, men, Nagas and great sages uttered blessings with shouts of victory.

अब प्रभु चरित सुनहु अति पावन । करत जे बन सुर नर मुनि भावन ॥

I have portrayed to the best of my ability the incomparable and charming affection (for Sri Rama) of the citizens (of Ayodhya) as well as of Bharata. Now hear of the all- holy exploits of the Lord, the he wrought in the forest to the delight of Gods, men and sages.

Karunāmaya raghunāth gosāi | Begi pāiahi pir parāi ||

Lord Sri Rama, who is all compassion, is readilly touched by others, pain.

Jagata mātu sarbagya bhavāni | mātu sukhad bolim mrudu bāni ||
जगत मातु सर्बग्य भवानी । मातु सुखद बोलीं मृदु बानी ॥
The mother of the Universe, the all-knowing Bhavani, then spoke the following words, which brought delight to her mother.

Bal Kaand – Doha 106
Pārbati bhala avasaru jāni | gai sambhu pahim mātu bhavāni ||
पारबती भल अवसरु जानी । गईं संभु पहिं मातु भवानी ॥
Finding it a good opportunity, Mother Bhavani called on Sambhu.

The Lord of Raghus proceeded still further and approached the Rashyamuk Hill.

Kishkindha Kaand – Doha 29
Taba nija bhuja bala rājivnaina | kautuk lāgi sang kapi senā ||
तब निज भुज बल राजिवनैना । कौतुक लागि संग कपि सेना ॥
Then the lotus-eyed Sri Rama will recover her by strength of his arm taking with him a host of monkeys for mere sport.

Bal Kaand – Doha 57
Sankara sahaja sarupu samhārā | lāgi samādhi akhand apārā ||
संकर सहज सरुपु सम्हारा । लागि समाधि अखंड अपारा ॥
Sankara communed with his own self and passed into an unbroken and indefinitely long Samadhi (trance).

Bal Kaand – Doha 69
Sambhu sahaj samaratha bhagvānā | ehi bibāham saba bidhi kalyānā ||
संभु सहज समरथ भगवाना । एहि बिबाहँ सब बिधि कल्याना ॥
Sambhu is all powerful by nature; for He is no other than God himself. Hence matrimony with him will prove auspicious in everyway.

Sukruta punja manjul ali mālā | gyān birāg bichār marālā ||
Aratha dharama kāmādik chāri | kahaba gyān bigyān bichāri ||
सुकृत पुंज मंजुल अलि माला । ग्यान बिराग बिचार मराला ॥
अरथ धरम कामादिक चारी । कहब ग्यान बिग्यान बिचारी ॥

The virtuous acts mentioned therein are the charming swarms of bees; the references to spiritual enlightenment, dispassion and reason represent the swan. The four ends of human existence, viz., worldly riches religious merit, enjoyment and liberation, the reasoned exposition of Gyan (knowledge of God in his absolute formless aspect) and Vigyan (Knowledge of qualified Divinity both with and without form), the nine sentiments of poetry.

May that home of bliss and ban of woe take compassion on me - He who sports in the courtyard of King Dasaratha.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 76
Rupa rāsi nrupa ajir bihāri | nāchahi nija pratibimba nihāri ||
रुप रासि न्रुप अजिर बिहारी । नाचहिं निज प्रतिबिंब निहारी ॥
Thus frolicking in the courtyard of the royal palace, the All-beautiful danced at the sight of his own shadow.

प्रनवऊँ प्रथम भरत के चरना । जासु नेम ब्रत जाइ न बरना ॥
राम चरन पंकज मन जासू । लुबुध मधुप इव तजई न पासू ॥

Of Sri Rama's brothers, I bow, first of all, to the feet of Bharata, whose self-descipline and religious austerity beggar description and whose mind thirsts for the lotus feet of Sri Rama like a bee and never leaves their side.

Bal Kaand – Doha 30
Jama gana muham masi jaga jamunā si | jivan mukuti hetu janu kāsi ||
जम गन मुहँ मसि जग जमुना सी । जीवन मुकुति हेतु जनु कासी ॥
Like the sacred river Yamuna in this world it scares away the messengers of Yama (the god of death). It is holy Kasi as it were for the liberation of souls.

Lanka Kaand – Doha 119
Bahuri Ram jankihi dekhai | Jamuna kali mala harani suhai ||
बहुरि राम जानकिहि देखाई । जमुना कलि मल हरनि सुहाई ॥
Sri Rama next pointed out to Janaka's Daughter the beautiful Yamuna, that washes away the impurities of the Kali age.

निराकारमोंकारमूलं तुरीयं । गिरा ग्यान गोतीतमीशं गिरीशं ॥
करालं महाकाल कालं कृपालं । गुणागार संसारपारं नतोऽहं ॥

I bow to the supreme Lord, who is devoid of Form, transcendent and extra-cosmic, beyond speech, understanding and senseperception, terrible yet gracious, the seed of the mystic syllable OM, the Rular of Kailasa, the Devourer even of the great Time-Spirit and the abode of virtues.

Sundar Kaand – Doha 38

Sri Rama, dear brother, is no mere human king; He is the lord of the universe and the death of death himself.

Lanka Kaand – Doha 54
Byāpaka brahma ajita bhuvneswar | lachiman kahā buja karunākara ||
ब्यापक ब्रह्म अजित भुवनेस्वर । लछिमन कहाँ बूझ करुनाकर ॥
The All-merciful and invincible Lord of the Universe, the all-pervading supreme Spirit, asked: "Where is Lakshmana?"

I supplicate Hanuman, the great Hero, whose glory has been extolled by Sri Rama Himself.

Mahābir bikram bajarangi | kumati nivār sumati ke sangi ||
महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी । कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी ॥
You are the great hero, you are endowed with valour, your body is as strong as Indra's Vajra. You are the destroyer of vile intellect, and you are the companion of one whose intellect is pure.

साधु चरित सुभ चरित कपासू । निरस बिसद गुनमय फ़ल जासू ॥
जो सहि दुख परछिद्र दुरावा । बंदनीय जेहिं जग जस पावा ॥

The conduct of holy men is noble as the career of the cotton plant, the fruit whereof is tasteless, white and fibrous (even as the doing of saints yeild results which are free from attachment, stainless and full of goodness). Even by suffering hardships (in the form of ginning, spinning and weaving) the cotton covers others' faults and has thereby earned in the world a renown which is worthy of adoration.

Glory to Sri Rama, who delights Raghu's line even as the sun delights a cluster of lotuses!

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 55
Badbhāgi banu avadha abhāgi | jo raghubanstilaka tumha tyāgi ||
बड़्भागी बनु अवध अभागी । जो रघुबंसतिलक तुम्ह त्यागी ॥
How blessed is the forest and how luckless Ayodhya, that will be deserted by you, O crown of Raghu's line!

I will refer to one or two such births at some length; please listen attentively, O wise Bhavani.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 287
Sāvdhān sunu sumukhi sulochani | Bharat kathā bhava bandh bimochani ||
सावधान सुनु सुमुखि सुलोचनि । भरत कथा भव बंध बिमोचनि ॥
Listen attentively, O fair-faced and bright-eyed lady; the story of Bharata loosens the bounds of worldly existence.

Sundar Kaand – Doha 7

Assuming the same (minute) form as he had taken before, he repaired to the Ashoka grove where Sita dwelt.

Sundar Kaand – Doha 17
Nāth ek āvā kapi bhāri | tehin asoka bātikā ujāri ||
नाथ एक आवा कपि भारी । तेहिं असोक बाटिका उजारी ॥
O lord, a huge monkey has made his appearance and laid waste the Asoka grove.

Uttara Kaand – Doha 107

nijam nirgunam nirvikalpam niriham | chidākāshamākāshavāsam bhajeham ||
नमामीशमीशान निर्वाणरुपं । विभुं व्यापकं ब्रह्म वेदस्वरुपं ॥
निजं निर्गुणं निर्विकल्पं निरीहं । चिदाकाशमाकाशवासं भजेऽहं ॥

I adore you, the guardian of the south-east quarter and Ruler of the whole universe, eternal bliss personified, the omnipresent and all-pervading Brahma manifest in the form of the Vedas. I worship Lord Shiva, shining in his own glory, devoid of material attributes, undifferentiated, desireless, all-pervading consciousness, having nothing to wrap about himself except ether (or enveloping ether itself).

Lanka Kaand – Doha 87
Jogini bhari bhari khappar sanchahin | bhut pisāch badhu nabha nanchahin ||
Bhata kapāl kartāl bajāvahin | chamundā nānā bidhi gāvahin ||
जोगिनि भरि भरि खप्पर संचहिं । भूत पिसाच बधू नभ नंचहिं ॥
भट कपाल करताल बजावहिं । चामुंडा नाना बिधि गावहिं ॥

The Yoginis (female attendants of Goddess Durga) took to storing blood in skulls, while female spirits and sprites danced in the air.
Even so Chamundas (another class of female attendants of Durga) sang songs in various strains, clashing the skulls of dead warriors like so many pairs of cymbals.

Arnya Kaand – Doha 9
Ek bāni karunānidhān ki | So priya jāke gati na ān ki ||
एक बानि करुनानिधान की । सो प्रिय जाकें गति न आन की ॥
I bank on one characteristic of the all-merciful Lord. He holds the devotee dear who depends exclusively on him.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 315
Charanpith karunānidhān ke | janu juga jāmik prajā prān ke ||
चरनपीठ करुनानिधान के । जनु जुग जामिक प्रजा प्रान के ॥
The sandals of the all-merciful Lord were like two watchmen entrusted with, the duty of guarding the people's life.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 137
Sursari sarsai dinkar kanyā | meklasutā godāvari dhanyā ||
सुरसरि सरसई दिनकर कन्या । मेकलसुता गोदावरि धन्या ॥
The heavenly river (Ganga), Saraswati, the Sun-born Yamuna, Narmada (the daughter of Mount Mekala), the blessed Godavari and the various other lakes, Seas, streams and rivers, all extolled the Mandakini.

Aarnya Kaand – Doha 29
Anuj samet gae prabhu tahavān | Godāvari tat āshram jahavān ||
अनुज समेत गए प्रभु तहवाँ । गोदावरि तट आश्रम जहवाँ ॥
Accompanied by his younger brother, the Lord went back to His hermitage on the bank of Godavari.

Sunahu sakhā kaha krupānidhānā | jehin jaya hoi so syandan ānā ||
Sakhā dharmamay asa ratha jāken | jitan kahan na katahum ripu tāken ||
सुनहु सखा कह कृपानिधाना । जेहिं जय होइ सो स्यंदन आना ॥
सखा धर्ममय अस रथ जाकें । जीतन कहँ न कतहुँ रिपु ताकें ॥

"Listen friend:" replied the all-merciful, "the chariot which leads one to victory is quite another."
My friend, he who owns such a chariot of piety shall have no enemy to conquer anywhere.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 18
Punya punj tumha pavankumara | sevahu jai krupa agara ||

A storehouse of merit as you are, O son of the wind-god, you go and serve the All-merciful.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 44
Punya punj binu milahi na santa | satasangati sansruti kar anta ||
पुन्य पुंज बिनु मिलहीं न संता । सतसंगति संसृति कर अंता ॥
Saints for their part are inaccessible without a stock of merit; communion with the Lord's devotees in any case brings to an end the cycle of births and deaths.

The sage then politely said to him in a pleading tone, "My Lord, let us go and witness a performance."
Hearing of a bow-sacrifice, the Lord of Raghus gladly accompanied the noble sage.

He would now turn back and then resume his journey in the same direction; and now he would dance and sing songs of praise.

Even Vishnu who takes a human form for the sake of gods, is omniscient like the slayer of Tripura, Siva.

Sambhu biranchi Vishnu Bhagavānā | Upajahi jāsu ans te nānā ||
संभु बिरंचि बिष्नु भगवाना । उपजहिं जासु अंस तें नाना ॥
Not this, not this, who is bliss itself, unconditioned and without comparison, and from a particle of whose being emanate a number of Shambhus, Virancis and Vishnus.

Further tell me, O merciful lord, wherefrom did the crow get this sacred and delightful story?
Further let me know how the dialogue proceeded between the crow and Garuda (the devourer of serpents), both of whom are devotees of Sri Hari.

Sibi, Dhadhicha and King Harshchandra suffered untold hardships for the sake of virtue.
The wise kings Rantideva and Bali upheld virtue even through many trials.

मंगल भवन अमंगल हारि । उमा सहित जेहि जपत पुरारी ॥
It is the abode of blessings and the remover of evils, and is muttered by Lord Shiva, the enemy of the demon Tripura, along with his consort, Uma.

Ponder in your heart, my lord, and reflect that separation from Rama is a vast ocean, you are the helmsman and Ayodhya the bark which has been boarded by our near and dear ones as its passengers.

Karandhār sadgura drudha nāvā | durlabha sāja sulabha kari pāvā ||
करनधार सदगुर द्ऱुढ नावा । दुर्लभ साज सुलभ करि पावा ॥
With my grace for a favourable wind and a worthy preceptor for a helmsman to steer this strong bark - a combination which, though difficult to secure, has been made easily available to it.

धरम धुरंधर गुननिधि ग्यानि । ह्रदयं भगति मति सारंगपानि ॥

In the city of Ayodhya they ruled a king who was a jewel of Raghu's race; he was called Dasaratha, a name which is familiar in the Vedas.
He was a champion of virtue, a repository of good qualities and a man of wisdom; he was a sincere devotee of God Vishnu (the wielder of the Saranga bow) and his mind was also set on him.

In this age of Kali no other discipline is of any avail - neither Yoga(mind-control) nor sacrifices, nor Japa(muttering of prayers) not austere penance nor any sacred vows nor ritual: Rama alone should be remembered, Rama alone should be glorified; and it is the catalogue of Rama's virtues alone that should be given ear to.

Mahāmohu mahiseshu bisālā | ramkathā kālikā karālā ||
महामोहु महिषेसु बिसाला । रामकथा कालिका कराला ॥
Appalling ignorance is the gigantic demon Mahisāsura (so-called because he was endowed with the form of a buffalo); while the narrative of Rāma is the dread Kalika (who made short work of the demon).

Rāmu kām sata koti subhaga tana | durgā koti amita ari mardana ||
रामु काम सत कोटि सुभग तन । दुर्गा कोटि अमित अरि मर्दन ॥
Sri Rama's body possesses the charm of a mriad Cupids. He is as inexorable in crushing the enemy as countless millions of Durgas.

सिद्ध बिरक्त महामुनि जोगी । तेपि कामबस भए बियोगी ॥

Beasts that walk on land and birds traversing the air, and water lost all sense of time and became victims of lust.
Even Siddhas(spiritual adepts), great sages who had no attraction for the world and Yogis(mystics) gave up their Yoga(contemplative union with God) under the influence of lust.

The immortal Lord Siva, who is the fountain of joy and a storehouse of wisdom and goodness, incessantly repeats it.

Jathā ananta rām bhagvānā | tathā kathā keerati guna nānā ||
जथा अनंत राम भगवाना । तथा कथा कीरति गुन नाना ॥
As there is no end to the divine Rama, even so his stories, glory and virtues are also endless.

सरजू नाम सुमंगल मूला । लोक बेद मत मंजुल कूला ॥
नदी पुनीत सुमानस नंदिनि । कलिमल तृन तरु मूल निकंदिनि ॥

Sarayu is the name of this river, which is the very fountain of pure bliss. The secular view-point and the view-point of the Vedas - these represent its two charming banks. This holy stream, issuing as it does from the beautiful Manasa lake, uproots in its course all the impurities of the Kali age, whether in the form of tiny blades of grass or of mighty trees.

Birati bibeka binaya bigyānā | bodha jathāratha beda purānā ||

They are further characterized by dispassion, discretion, modesty, knowledge of the truth relating to God as well as by a correct knowledge of the Vedas and Puranas.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 42
Lāgahin kumukha bachana subha kaise | magaham gayādika tiratha jaise ||
लागहिं कुमुख बचन सुभ कैसे । मगहँ गयादिक तीरथ जैसे ॥
These polite words adorned her detestable mouth even as sacred spots just as Gaya is situated in the accursed land of Magadha(South Bihar).

You have asked me to repeat the history of the Lord of Raghus, which is potent enough to sanctify all the spheres even as the Ganga purifies the whole world.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 54
Dhanya sati pāvan mati tori | raghupati charan priti nahi thori ||
धन्य सती पावन मति तोरी । रघुपति चरन प्रीति नहीं थोरी ॥
You are blessed indeed, O virtuous lady; your idea is holy, and you possess not a little love for the feet of Sri Rama (the Lord of the Raghus).

He also gave them varied instructions in their moral duty; but overmastered by love they would not turn back even though urged to return.

Lage kahan upades anekā | sahita dharama naya birati bibekā ||
लगे कहन उपदेस अनेका । सहित धरम नय बिरति बिबेका ॥
Gave discourse containing righteousness, ethics, dispassion and discrimination.

Every man found Sri Rama facing himself; but none could perceive the great mystery behind it.

तेहिं करि बिमल बिबेक बिलोचन । बरनऊं राम चरित भव मोचन ॥

The dust of the Guru's feet is a soft and agreeable, salve, which is ambrosia as it were for the eyes and remedies the defects of vision. Having brightened my eyes of discernment thereby I proceed to relate the story of Sri Rama, whcih secures freedom from the bondage of mundane existence.

सनमुख लोह भरत सन लेऊँ । जिअत न सुरसरि उतरन देऊँ ॥

Equip yourself and blockade the ghats; be prepared in everyway to face death. I will encounter bharat in open combat and would not let him cross the Ganga so long as there is life in me.

सुंदर सहज अगम अनुमानी । कीन्हि तहाँ रावन रजधानी ॥
Percieving that the city was naturally beautiful and inaccessible for others, Ravana fixed his capital there.

जगदंबिका जानि भव भामा । सुरन्ह मनहिं मन कीन्ह प्रनामा ॥
Recognizing in her the Mother of the universe and Spouse of Shiva, the divinities mentally bowed to her.

Sundar Kaand – Doha 33
Yaha sambād jāsu ura āvā | Raghupati charan bhagati soi pāvā ||
यह संबाद जासु उर आवा । रघुपति चरन भगति सोइ पावा ॥
Even he who takes this dialogue (between Sri Rama and Hanuman) to heart is blessed with devotion to Sri Rama's feet.

"Angad is my name: I am Vali's son. Did you ever meet him?" Ravana felt uncomfortable when he heard Angad's reply. "Yes, I do remember that there was a monkey, Vali by name."

Aranya Kaand – Doha 15

धर्म तें बिरति जोग तें ग्याना । ग्यान मोच्छ्प्रद बेद बखाना ॥
Dispassion results from the practice of virtue, while spiritual wisdom comes of the practice of Yoga (concentration of mind); and wisdom is the bestower of liberation; so declare the Vedas.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 118
Tathā mocchha sukha sunu khagarāi | rahi na sakai hari bhagati bihāi ||
तथा मोच्छ सुख सुनु खगराई । रहि न सकई हरि भगति बिहाई ॥
Even so, mark you, O king of the birds, the joy of final beatitude, cannot stay apart from Devotion of Sri Hari.

अति हरि कृपा जाहि पर होई । पाउँ देइ एहिं मारग सोई ॥
He alone who enjoys the utmost grace of Sri Hari can set his foot on this road (the road to Devotion).

The motives of Sri Rama's birth are many, each more wonderful than the other.

कहहिं सुनहिं अनुमोदन करहीं । ते गोपद इव भवनिधि तरहीं ॥

Men who sing this story in guileless spirit attain the object of their soul's desire.
Nay, they who repeat or listen to it or even approve of its recitation cross the ocean of mundane existence as they would the print of a cow's hoof.

भवन एक पुनि दीख सुहावा । हरि मंदिर तहँ भिन्न बनावा ॥

He saw the demon chief buried in sleep; but he did not find Vaideha's Daughter there.
He then noticed another splendid building, with a temple of Sri Hari standing apart.

The chief of Raghu's race, who is an ocean of bliss, was filled with delight to see this glorious king of holy places.
With his own gracious lips He told Sita, Lakshman and his friend (Guha) the greatness of Prayaga.

Those who love not Siva's lotus feet cannot even dream of pleasing Rama.

Linga thapi bidhivata kari pujā | siva samāna priya mohi na doojā ||
लिंग थापि बिधिवत करि पूजा । सिव समान प्रिय मोहि न दूजा ॥
Having installed an emblem of Lord Siva and worshipped it with due solemnity, He said, "No one else is so dearto me as Siva."

Note now, dear Garuda, the diseases of the mind, from which everyone suffers.
Egotism is a counterpart of the most painful gout; while hypocrisy, deceit, arrogance and pride correspond to the disease known as Dracontiasis (which is marked by the presence in the body of a parasite known as the guinea-worm.)

भरत कहेउ सुरसरि तव रेनू । सकल सुखद सेवक सुरधेनू ॥
Bharata exclaimed, "Mother Ganga!, your sands are delightful to all and the very cow of plenty to your devotees."

सत्यमूल सब सुकॄत सुहाए । बेद पुरान बिदित मनु गाए ॥
Veracity is the root of all noble virtues, as is well-known in the Vedas and Puranas and has been declared by Manu (the first law-giver of the world, the author Manusmruti).

For aught i know Sri Hari is present everywhere alike and is revealed only by love. Having taken the form of all creation, both animate and inanimate, he is yet destitute of everything and passionless; he is revealed by love even as fire is manifested by friction.

He is excessively fond of his devotees and treats them as his own; he has never frowned at him to whom he has once shown his favour.

Uttar Kaand – Doha 43
Kabahunka kari karunā nara dehi | deta isa binu hetu sanehi ||
कबहुँक करि करुना नर देहि । देत ईस बिनु हेतु सनेही ॥
Rarely does God, who loves the Jiva without any self interest, graciously bestow on it a human form.

है प्रभु परम मनोहर ठाऊँ । पावन पंचबटी तेहि नाऊँ ॥
चले राम मुनि आयसु पाई । तुरतहिं पंचबटी निअराई ॥

There is, my lord, a most charming and holy spot; it is called Panchvati.
On receiving the sage's permission Sri Rama departed and drew near to Panchvati in a short while.

Whosoever recites Hanuman Chalisa will be successful, Gaurisa (Bhagwan Shiv) is my witness.
Tulsidas who is forever servant of Hari prays that Bhagwan enshrines in his heart.

In whichever species we may be born from time to time as a result of our actions, may God grant us that Sita's spouse may be our Lord.

Subha aru asubh karama anuhāri | Isu dei falu hridaya bichāri ||
सुभ अरु असुभ करम अनुहारी । ईसु देह फ़लु ह्र्दयँ बिचारी ॥
God requites our actions according as they are good or bad, weighing them in the scale of his judgment.

Hari har pad rati mati na kutaraki | tinha kahun madhur kathā raghubar ki ||
हरि हर पद रति मति न कुतरकी । तिन्ह कहुँ मधुर कथा रघुबर की ॥
To those, however, who possess devotion to the feet of God Vishnu and Shiva and whose mind is not perverse, the tale of the Chief of the Raghus will taste as sweet.

प्राननाथु रघुनाथ गोसाईं । जो ब़ड होत सो राम ब़डाईं ॥
And her beloved lord is no other than Lord Sri Rama, from whose glory all great ones derive their greatness.

Jasi bibāha kai bidhi shruti gai | Mahamuninh so sab karvāi ||
जसि बिबाह कै बिधि श्रुति गाई । महामुनिन्ह सो सब करवाई ॥
The great sages had the nuptial ceremony performed in all its details as laid down in the Vedas.

Mangalmurati lochan bhari bhari | nirakhahin harasi dandvat kari kari ||
मंगलमूरति लोचन भरि भरि । निरखहिं हरषि दंडवत करि करि ॥
Ever feasting their eyes on Sri Rama, the incarnation of blessedness, and gladly prostrating themselves before him again and again.

Gurgriham gae padhana raghurāi | alapa kāla bidyā saba āi ||
गुरगृहँ गए प़ढन रघुराई । अलप काल बिद्या सब आई ॥
The Lord of Raghus then proceeded to his preceptor's residence for study and in a short time mastered all the branches of knowledge.

The assemblage of saints, whis is all joy and felicity, is a moving Prayaga (the king of all holy places) as it were.

Bal Kaand – Doha 30
Santa samāj payodhi ramā si | bisva bhāra bhara acala chamā si ||
संत समाज पयोधि रमा सी । बिस्व भार भर अचल छमा सी ॥
It flows from the assemblage of saints, even as Lakshmi (the goddess of wealth) sprang from the ocean; and like the immovable earth it bears the burden of the entire creation.

नारद जानेउ नाम प्रतापू । जग प्रिय हरि हरि हर प्रिय आपू ॥
नामु जपत प्रभु कीन्ह प्रसादू । भगत सिरोमनि भे प्रहलादू ॥

Narada realized the glory of the Name; that is why, while Sri Hari is beloved of the world (and Hara is dear to Sri Hari), he (Narada) is dear to Hari and Hara (Visnu and Shiva) both. It was because of his repeating the name that the Lord showered his grace on Prahalada, who thereby became the crest-jewel of devotees.

Binu satasanga bibeka na hoi | rāma krupā binu sulabha nā soi ||

Wisdom dawns not without association with saints and such association cannot be easily had without the grace of Sri Rama.

Ayodhya Kaand – Doha 92
Hoi bibeku moha bhrama bhāgā | taba raghunātha charana anurāgā ||
होइ बिबेकु मोह भ्रम भागा । तब रघुनाथ चरन अनुरागा ॥
It is only when right understanding comes that the error of delusion disappears and then alone one develops love for the feet of Sri Rama (the Lord of Raghus).

Thrilling over with love the sage replied, "Whatever you think, speak or do will be the essence of piety in this world."

Aranya Kaand – Doha 44
Amitbodha aniha mitabhogi | satyasāra kabi kobida jogi ||
अमितबोध अनीह मितभोगी । सत्यसार कबि कोबिद जोगी ॥
They are masters of the six passions (lust, anger, greed, infatuation, pride and jealousy), sinless, disinterested, firm, possessing nothing, pure (both within and without), full of bliss, of boundless wisdom, desireless, moderate in diet, truthful, inspired, learned and united with god.

कृष्ण तनय होइहि पति तोरा, बचनु अन्यथा होइ न मोरा ॥

When Sri Krishna will descend in the line of Yadu to releive the earth of its heavy burden,
Your lord will be born again as his son (Pradyumna); this prediction of mine can never be untrue.

Listen, Garuda(Mount of sri hari), a mother becomes as terrible as death and a father assumes a role of Yama(The god of death).

Alpmrutyu nahi kavniu pirā | Sab sundar sab biruj sarirā ||
अल्पमृत्यु नहिं कवनिउ पीरा । सब सुंदर सब बिरुज सरिरा ॥
There was no premature death nor suffering of any kind; everyone was comely and sound of body.

O sage, in due time, I tell you, this king, with his family, was born as a demon.
He had ten heads and twenty arms. His name was Raavana; he was a formidable hero.

The essence of a king's duty is only this much, which lies hidden in the Sastras, even as a desire is cherised in the heart (before it is expressed).
Religion, statecraft and an enquiry about Brahma(the infinite) are domains to which I have some access according to my own poor lights.

They are true teachers of wisdom, dispassion and yoga (contemplative union with God) and celestial physicians (Ashvinikumaras) for the fell disease of metempsychosis.
The referances to Japa (the muttering of mystic formulae), austerity, Yoga (contemplative union with god) and detachment form the world - all these represent the charming aquatic creatures of this lake.

Our days and nights are spent in sinful persuits and yet we have no cloth to cover our loins and get no food enough to fill our belly.
How could we possibly have ever dreamt of entertaining pious sentiments but for the virtue of having seen the Delighter of Raghus.

I greet the pollen-like dust of the lotus feet of my precepter, refulgent, fragrant and flavoured with love.
The splendour of gems in the form of nails on the feet of the blessed guru unfolds divine vision in the heart by its very thought.

He found the mountain but failed to single outthe herb he, therefore, lost no time in uprooting the mount itself.
The physician then immediately applied the medicine and Lakshmana cheerfully rose and sat up.

Wisdom and unwisdom dwell in the heart of all: so declare the Puranas and Vedas, my lord.
Where there is wisdom, prosperity of every kind reigns; and where there is unwisdom misfortune is the inevitable end.

Just as a people tormented by the fear of calamities and afflicted by threefold troubles as well as by the influence of evil stars and by pestilence feel happy on migrating to a well-governed and prosperous country, Bharata too had similar feelings.
The natural wealth of the forest grew while Sri Rama lived there, as the people rejoice on securing a good king.

Proceed all of you, gallant warriors, together to the south and enquire of everyone you meet the whereabouts of Sita.

Sri Rama and Laksmana accompanied the sage and reached the bank of the Ganga, the stream of which purifies the whole universe.
The son of Gadhi, Visvamitra, related the whole legend how the celestial stream had come down upon earth.

Devotion to Sri Ram represents, in this moving Prayaga, the stream of the holy Ganga, the river of the celestials; while the proceeding of an enquiry into the nature of Brahma (the Absolute) constitutes the Sarasvati (a subterranean stream which is traditionally believed to join the Ganga and the Yamuna at Prayaga, thus accounting for the name 'Triveni', which signifies a meeting-place of three rivers).
Discourses on Karma or Action, consisting of injunctions and interdictions, have been spoken of as the sacred Yamuna–a daughter of the sun-god in her angelic form–washing the impurities of the Kali age.

Kasi or Varanasi and Magadha or North Bihar (the accursed land), the holy Ganga the river of the celestials – and the unholy Karmanasa (in Bihar), the desert land of Maravara (Western Rajaputana and Sindha) and the rich soil of Malava, the Brahmana – who is a veritable god on earth – and the barbarian who feeds on the cow, heaven and hell, attachment and dispassion.
The Vedas and other sacred books have sifted good from evil.
